Crazy? Well, we're not the only ones!
When Linda and I started sailing together 30 years ago, we would occasionally meet couples who were living year-round on a sailboat. They either just got back from a several-year journey around the world, or they were on their way, or they were traveling the up the East Coast to Maine for the summer and sailing south to winter in the Caribbean. They were living the cruising life. A fantasy.
When I left the world of work, we got fully committed to living that fantasy. We decided to buy a boat and cruise for the next 2-5 years. We attended Cruiser's University during the Annapolis Boat Show, met a lot of experienced cruisers, and took courses throughout the summer and fall.
We ultimately decided that the French-made Amel Super Maramu was the cruising boat for us. Why? While it can comfortably accommodate a crew of 6, it is a boat specifically designed for a couple to sail around the world. It is safe; it is roomy; it is solid; it is practical. We bought the boat and we are now in year three.
Our website will give you some idea of our lifestyle but there are some other cruisers who have done a far superior job of demonstrating this fantasy life. The following are a couple links to other Amel-owner websites and YouTube channels. Watching these videos will knock your socks off.
Maybe we'll see you down here in the next couple of years...

Ken and Zivile Powers have just started their journey around the world. They spent their first season in the East Caribbean. We met them in Santa Marta, Columbia and buddy-sailed with them to the San Blas Islands. Currently Rascal, Aquarius, and Aloha (all Super Maramus) are at the Shelter Bay Marina at the entrance to the Panama Canal. Aquarius and Aloha leaving the 30th of December to go through the canal to the Pacific side. Linda and I are going with them as "line handlers." Soon thereafter, Aquarius (and Aloha) will cross the Pacific on the next leg of their journey. Also great production values. You can subscribe to their YouTube channel here.

Bill and Judy Rouse have recently completed their journey around the world and are now living in Galveston, TX. Their journey was over a period of 10 years during which they traveled extensively, refined their skills, and made considerable contributions to other Amel owners (like me!) Their blog and their website will give you a great idea of the cruising life including their extraordinary experiences as they took their time to get around the world. In his second retirement, Bill has started The Amel School for those seriously interested in purchasing, sailing and cruising on the Amel. He tells me he has never been so busy. www.amelschool.com.
